We took off on Saturday, October 29, 2005 for Malta with Air Malta flight KM513 at 5:35pm and arrived around 2.5 hours later at Malta airport. There we went to the taxi booth and got our taxi-ticket (MTL 8.25) for the ride to our hotel in Sliema.

Our room at the Victoria Hotel, located in the Gorg Borg Oliver Street, was very comfortable, with a large king-size bed, minibar, air conditioner, a large bathroom and a balcony with a nice view onto Sliema and the sea. Only the TV could have been a bit larger and except for BBC News there were no English or American channels. But who flies to Malta to watch TV anyway?

The room rate was MTL 38 (approx. € 90) per night, and that included the extensive breakfast buffet. From the hotel it was only a couple of minutes walk down to the waterfront, where the ferry to Valletta and all the tour-boats are located. We did not book the room directly with the hotel, but instead we made the room reservation back in July on www.bookings.de

Our flights were also booked back in July 2005. We got an acceptable deal on www.airmalta.com - € 518 for two tickets including all taxes and fees.

Sunday, Monday and Tuesday we spent exploring the island. We went to the market in Marsaxlokk - a traditional fishing village located in the south-eastern part of Malta, we explored Valletta, where we visited the "Malta Experience" multimedia show and traveled to the old capital of Malta, the tiny medieval town Mdina, situated in the centre of the island. --- click on "picture gallery" for more details.

Two evenings we spent in St. Julian’s which seems to be the entertainment center of Malta. It was a long but very nice walk from our hotel in the center of Sliema to St. Julian’s.

We think Malta is well worth a visit, but we found it overpopulated and there are no landscaping or nice parks at all. The island lacks the color green. And there are construction sites everywhere. The island seems to burst at the seams. On the other hand, the Maltese people are very friendly and always ready to help the visitor. We were glad we traveled to Malta and had some excellent days at this island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea.
